Lemme say this right off the top: there is no way 2025 is gonna compete with 80s Rock 2024. But I'll still say YES to anything interesting that comes this way. Especially if it's a band I haven't seen before. Why not?
In lieu of an official 80s pop tour this year (like the Totally Tubular Festival in 2024), the Simple Minds tour is offering the next best thing. 3 bands, cheap tickets, and enough 80s hits and people watching to make it good night out for Jenny & I.
As the headliner, Simple Minds actually totally overdelivered! Real band, playing live (no prerecorded backing), and sounding GREAT.
A testament to that greatness: keeping the audience locked in for an hour before they even got to their biggest hits. Really a pleasant surprise. And it made for a heck of a back half of the set!
If the goal is to put people in an 80s headspace, Modern English is the right band to do it. I was impressed by em last year, and that was confirmed again on this night. Synthy new wave pop rock delivered live and energetic to start the night.
For sure, they have a sound. Luckily, it's a nostalgic one. And they kinda grew on us, enough that we didn't mind waiting for Melt With You. (which killed)
Sandwiched in the middle, Soft Cell kinda... went soft. Not terrible, but for sure kinda took the wind out of the sails. Still the same two guys (which is good), but just up there singing to prerecorded music (not good). What really saved it for us, was this lady!
#1 fan. Must've been her favorite tape in the walkman growing up.
She knew em all, danced the whole show, and even got a shout out from the stage.
Notalgia vibes like that are relatable and fun to watch. Go girl!
