Electric Light Orchestra is admittedly more of a 70s band, but they didn't enter my consciousness until MTV. So, 80s rock to me.
A little bit prog rock. A little bit pop rock. A little bit cello. Way experimental. ELO's mashup of rock and strings is unique and instantly recognizable. Like Queen or Pink Floyd, they're just... their own thing. (the greats often are, right?) And it's mostly due to Jeff Lynne, the band's founder and driving force. Or conductor ya might say.

I made it a point to catch ELO on a rare tour stop in Dallas several years ago, and that could've checked the box for me. But they're so good, with such an interesting catalog to pull from. The draw of seeing them do it one. more. time. before they're over and out is too much to resist. Encore!
