RETR@migo: April 17, 2016

I'm so glad we made this decision! It's been a great experience. The members are loving and welcoming, the preaching is insightful and I love that all of us are able to serve!

(Side note: Wouldya look at all those bangs?!)

It's official...the Smith/Horn lineage now includes a Methodist family!

For the last year, we have been attending First United Methodist Church The Colony every Sunday and have enjoyed our experience there. We like the people (we already knew 2 families that attend), we like the music (they have an AWESOME piano player that enhances the service), we like the role they play in the community (they serve in soooo many ways!) and we like the pastor. The style of the service was a huge draw as well, as we both like the feel of a traditional service, but we also like having younger people in that type of service (many of the younger congregations tend to be contemporary and feel-good and not-so-churchy).

Through God’s grace, First United Methodist Church The Colony strives to be a welcoming, diverse congregation serving the community through worship, prayer, outreach, service, study and fellowship.

So as part of the church's 40th Anniversary celebration today, we decided to make it official and we joined the church.

Honestly, the denomination is not crucial to me -- denominations are all man-made. It's more about the specific church and people and how they follow Biblical standards. I grew up in a non-denominational Bible church. Jeff grew up Catholic. I had been attending a Presbyterian church for the last 8+ years. Now we are Methodist.

Here's an interesting article that compares Catholicism and Methodism. One of the most quickly noticeable differences is the role of women in ministry. And as with most denominations, there are differing opinions on religious authority, salvation, sacraments, and saints. Jeff and I both agree with the main doctrines of the Methodist religion -- and Methodism handles some of the social issues that tend to challenge many people.

Oh, and did we mention the church is only .9 mile from our house!
