It's a great question. Not one that I ponder often, but it does cross my mind occasionally.
To be clear, I'm not really concerned about any of the above being thrown out. Pretty sure my family knows it's valuable based on my reverence for this stuff. I mean, I have a room and a half dedicated to it! I trust they'll know better than to toss it.
I do shudder a bit though when I think about stuff being dispersed willy nilly. Especially the retroLAB collection with all it's various pieces that work together. It's been a slow process of acquiring the right monitor to go with the right computer, the right (working!) disk drive and software to go with each system, etc. I think now that it's collected, it should all stay together, right? Make it easier on the next guy, right?
Adam Savage talked about this recently, and it's given me a fresh perspective...
None of this stuff is precious. All of it is meant to be used.
So, disperse away my descendants! And let it go in whatever willy nilly fashion the next guy wants it. If that next guy turns out to actually be a descendant, great! If not, I'll still be happy that it's still in use at all.
In the meantime, I'll try to keep it all organized!
