RETR@migo: January 11, 2018

I can finally say with confidence that I'm a reader now too!! Nonfiction and biographies are by far my favorite. I read 23 books last year. The secret: set a goal and make a plan: Plan your work, work your plan.

One thing I've always admired about everyone else in my family is the amount of books they read. It seems they were always reading something, or could reference content from something they had read. I always wished I read more books, but for whatever reason, it just never happened...until now! I'm on a reading streak, and that makes me feel like I'm finally part of the family!

I think the trick is that I have found the type of books that I really enjoy, and that pretty much makes it happen. So what is my preferred genre? Biographies about people who have overcome unbelievable circumstances or have done amazing things to help others. Here's the latest:

  • Left to Tell, by Immaculee Ilibagiza - she is a survivor of the 1994 Rwanda holocaust
  • George Muller, the Guardian of Bristol's Orphans - he was a missionary in the mid-1800's who cared for thousands of orphans
  • Corrie ten Boom, Keeper of the Angel's Den - she is a survivor of the Nazi holocaust
  • Little Princes, by Connor Grennan - he helped orphans in Nepal

And I just started a new book about Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights movement. (Thank you, library, for displaying books related to current events and upcoming holidays!)

Ok, so now I'm looking for more suggestions. Do let me know if you've got a favorite do-gooder biography!

Related side note: I've also been enjoying my nightly reading time with Naomi! We've recently finished some fun fiction stories: Flora & Ulysses (thanks Jessica!), as well as the "true stories behind fairy tales" series by Liesl Shurtliff: Rump and Red (Jack will be next).
