The title sounds like this should be a fable or tall tale, but this is one of my recent encounters with nature. It occurred at Fiesta Texas -- Jeff, Naomi and Danielle were on a ride that I did not want to ride (a common occurrence). I found a shady spot to sit down and pass the time. I was sitting on a curb and noticed this spider walking by -- yes, a spider with what appears to be a sac of baby spiders!
I watched him her for a few minutes to see what she was doing, where she was going and if she would suddenly hatch a zillion tiny spiders.
Well, while sitting there, suddenly a bird swooped down and yes, ate the spider! But at the last second, the spider detached the sac of eggs (yes, seriously!) and that white ball rolled away a bit. A moment later, the bird ate the sac of eggs! OMG. I wonder if the spider and egg reunited in the stomach...
The moral of my story? Well, google found this for me, and I do like the ending of that story much better: work together instead of individual gain! But unfortunately, survival of the fittest is a reality in nature!
