June 20, 1975: JAWS is released, creating the summer blockbuster, and changing the way people feel about swimming in the ocean. (or swimming pool, or shower, depending on your rationale)

While I was only 4 years old at the time, I distinctly remember seeing this movie on the big screen with my family. Seared into my brain from that experience are two things. First, ducking behind the chair in front of me at some point. (coping mechanism?) And second, Quint's demise. I vividly remember his frantic kicking as he slid into the shark's gaping maw.
Good. Lord.
WHAT IN THE WORLD my parents were thinking taking the whole family to see this, I have no idea.
I'm a survivor. (of the nightmare of sliding right into the mouth of the shark at the foot of my bed)
And, oddly, it's my favorite movie! (how does the brain work? I dunno.)
Now, true, I do not, to this day, ever go swimming in the ocean. I love the shore. I love the surf. I love the water on my feet. Maybe my calves. But that's where it ends for me. Knees maybe if I'm really in a mood. But swimming, like where my legs are just dangling? NO!

But it's a small price to pay for all the enjoyment I've gotten from the movies (except JAWS 3D, we don't talk about that), novels, making-of books, and spin-off series. Totally worth the PTSD.
Always bring a bigger boat.
