What wasn't included in the original post, is that shortly after planting it, the tree had to be moved to a slightly different location, a few streets down on the trail. It needed to be moved farther away from the existing gas easement, in the event that the gas line ever needed to be expanded. Move it now, rather than risk losing it later. It ended up on our street, and it is thriving and growing strong!
Our local Girl Scout council recently sent out one if its regular emails with various information, activities and service opportunities. One particular "badge"/community service opportunity caught my eye: Communi-Tree. I love trees, I know our girls love anything in nature and they always spend a portion of their cookie profits on some type of community service, so we decided to go for it!
Our HOA was excited to have the girls plant a tree along the neighborhood green belt and the landscaper agreed to assist with tree recommendations and placement. So the girls learned about trees and voted to plant a Vitex ornamental tree.
Thanks to the neighborhood landscape crew, the girls had a perfect hole for a 30-gallon tree! (Ever tried to dig up Texas clay soil??)
Voila! A new tree to give oxygen, beauty, shelter and shade!
Turns out the HOA president is a big supporter of scouting (he has a son that was a boy scout years ago). He invited someone from the city to come out during the planting, and that guy invited our girls to city hall to meet the mayor (seen below) and to receive recognition for adding to the city's Tree City USA status. (NOTE: They were also mentioned in the sidebar of the city's weekly newsletter)
The HOA president also treated the girls to ice cream as a thank you for adding to the neighborhood trail!
It turned out to be a wonderful experience for the girls and a nice benefit to the community!
UPDATE: Turns out the girls made the front page of the local newspaper!

As expected, they loved planting and mulching...
