Special Olympics Texas 2024 Summer Games, Fort Worth |
Volunteering with Special Olympics is always a good time, no matter what we're tasked with.
Water boy? Sure thing.
Cheering section? On it!
Javelin? Uh... ok.
We've seen it on tv lots of times. How hard could it be, right? (coordinator did tell us not to try to catch the javelin, kinda makes ya wonder about the previous volunteers...)
Well lemme tell ya, some of these athletes make it look alot easier than it is. There's definitely a bit of technique involved in getting the tip to land first. If not, it's a "No throw".
A good throw and everyone springs into action: Zan & Kris on marking the spot, Jeff on javelin retrieval, Naomi & Fin on measuring the distance, Danielle on scorekeeping and Jenny on keeping everyone organized!
I mean, of course we had to try it. And for the record, neither Kris or I's best throws would've won the competition. Truly, we were outclassed and out specialed.
So no awards for us. But plenty to the real athletes. Congratulations to the winners!
New volunteer "opportunity" this year: teardown. What started with "Can you take down that backdrop and put it in the truck?" ended about an hour later with the final items going into the SECOND truck. whew!
Good people. Good weather. And always a good time. This one stays on repeat.
