Annular Solar Eclipse

Nature + Science = exciting stuff! Well, at least to me.

This past Saturday, the stars aligned...ok, really it was the sun and moon and the DFW metroplex all aligning to bring us a super cool phenomenon-- an 80% solar eclipse. And I was excited. Others thought it was neat and wow, cool, but nobody in my vicinity was quite as enthusiastic as me.

Jeff did bring out props to show off the effect-- the shadows of the colander holes showed the shadow of the eclipse nicely (similar to a pinhole in a piece of paper but times 100!)

And speaking of shadows, all the shadows of the leaves from the trees looked quite neat at maximum eclipse!

Many thanks to Mimi and Pa for sharing their extra solar glasses with us (pack of 10 means opportunity to share), so that we could safely look directly at the sun! Being able to watch the progression of the moon over about an hour was really cool. (For the record, I suspect Pa was probably about as eager as I was, judging from his pictures and light meter readings.) (NOTE: Also for the record, Naomi happened to be working inside during this time, so she did not get to express her level of enthusiasm. )

We tried to take pictures from our phones through the glasses, but it did not work. But alas, other people with proper equipment, did it for us! This is pretty close to what we saw exactly through our glasses.

Looking forward to the next big event, which happens to be only about 6 months away (April 8, 2024 - mark your calendars now!) -- our solar glasses are stored in a safe spot (remember: top desk drawer!) so we can do this all over again!
