Colorado UP

Road trippin' to Colorado is a vacation we've done multiple times (2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) and it has yet to get old! The exact route varies a bit (especially when the navigator misses a turn in Decatur or thinks they know which way we're going out of Tucumcari...), but alas, the planned route always goes through Amarillo!

First meal of the trip is always at The Big Texan. Still no free 72 oz steak yet. THEN: 2016 and 2017 and 2018 and 2019 and 2020

The first road trip site is Cadillac Ranch. THEN: 2011 and 2012 and 2013 and 2016 and 2017 and 2018 and 2019 and 2020

And when the cars are underwater, no problem, the ground becomes the canvas for spray paint!

One of our favorite overnights is in Tucumcari... THEN: 2017 and 2019 and 2020

At the classic Blue Swallow Motel on Historic Route 66. THEN: 2017 and 2019

This time, we enjoyed a cool lightning show and beautiful rainbow.

And there's our favorite landmark...which has been moved to a new spot now, with a bigger, safer turnout. THEN: 2016 and 2017 and 2018 and 2020

A new, impromptu destination was added after learning about it from our motel neighbor, who I chatted with at The Blue Swallow (we imagined it was like road trippers did back in the 50s). Check out Bishop Castle.

It was an incredibly unique place, but it seemed (to me) to be lacking in safety standards (holes in the floor with just a board laid on top, and a portable saw horse in front of a 2 story drop off and a rope signaling railing that was missing. 😬)

Naomi stayed on the structurally sound surface. Danielle and I (barely) ventured out on the questionable area.

And Jeff went all the way to the top!

Another regular restaurant stop at Fargo's for pizza and pasta in Colorado Springs. THEN: 2016 and 2018

Manitou Springs natural spring water, anyone?

Not so much...

Just down the street, everyone WAS in for Arcade Amusements! THEN: 2011 and 2016 and 2018

And for old times sake... THEN: 2011

We're still on the lookout for Big Foot! THEN: 2011 and 2016

Pike's Peak moved (and upgraded) their sign too! THEN: 2011 & 2016

Jeff and Danielle (this time) ventured out to a special marker. THEN: 2016

Naomi and I opted for the new, safe viewing spot!

It's been awhile, but we made a return trip to the Olympic Training center. THEN: 2011 and 2016

We had a phenomenal tour guide (Mike) who made the tour incredibly fascinating with tons of behind-the-scenes stories and info. We're now counting down the days til Paris Summer Olympics 2024!
