Today, Memorial Day, we remember and honor all those who have died in service to our great nation. Nobody is a fan of war, but it seems to be a by-product of being a powerful, democratic nation, and where there is war, there is going to be death. I will be forever grateful for those who have served in our armed forces and I will always remember the sacrifice of those who lost their lives as a result of that service. While I do not know any personally, I do recognize the significance and the impact to the families left behind.
In order to actually put action behind those words, we again participated in Carry the Load, a 24-hour event that focuses on the true meaing of Memorial Day. But this year, we invited our Houston framily to join us! We did leave the kids at home this time, so that we could walk the whole trail (plus a little) for a total of 10 miles. The weather was beautiful, cool breeze, cloud-cover, and even a light rain shower. We walked, we talked, we admired the lovely Katy trail, we read veteran storyboards, we cheered on Adaptive Training Foundation athletes, waved at fellow USAA employees and were thankful for all we have.
Right on the trail is the Katy Ice House, where we rested our legs, enjoyed a beverage and ate a yummy dinner. This place is really cool - a huge outdoor dining area covered totally by trees and lights. It's the perfect place to hang with dear friends and appreciate all that life has to offer.
We are forever thankful for our framily and the memories that the kids continue to build! The girls manage to pick up wherever they left off last time we were together. Whether it's Just Dance, movies, games or swimming, they always have a good time just being with each other!
Our tradition of MiCocina and Andy's Custard also continues. Nothing like Mexican food and custard to signal our love of country this Memorial Day weekend. Well, maybe it's not so much what you do, but who you do it with that truly matters!
