TOPS

Danielle became a TOPS Soccer buddy this Spring. 

"TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a recreational sports program for children and adults with intellectual, emotional, or physical disabilities offered only through local US Youth Soccer-affiliated soccer clubs. TOPSoccer provides people with diverse abilities an opportunity to play soccer in a structured environment that is safe, fun, supportive, and inclusive."

Each Saturday afternoon, Danielle headed to the soccer fields to buddy up with a soccer player. Each week was a different player and Danielle embraced each unique opportunity. One player did not speak English. One opted to stick extra close to Mom. Another didn't speak at all, but loved to hold Danielle's hand and then just run!

The experience was more about being outside in the sunshine, being around other players, moving around a lot and adding a soccer ball every now and then! The time was filled with a few drills, some skills and a variety of games.

Danielle was initially motivated to sign up with friends to earn volunteer hours for National Junior Honor Society. However, it turned into something she looked forward to and had fun helping with!

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
