I have been a Girl Scout leader for 10 years, starting with Naomi's troop and then switching to Danielle's when her troop needed a leader. I love being a Girl Scout leader because it gives me an opportunity to teach good values and lead fun times with a group of girls, to hopefully leave a positive impact on their lives, or at least a few good memories!
A few months ago I learned that Girl Scouts would be kicking off a new "Becoming Me" program in partnership with Michelle Obama, who happens to be someone I think highly of. I have read her book and admired her work while she was the First Lady. I'm impressed with her confidence and character, and she happens to be a mother of two girls too!
I was super excited about the event with Mrs. Obama -- which took place last night. The stories she told, the wisdom she shared and the tips she gave to all the girls was truly inspiring -- and she managed to hold Naomi and Danielle's attention on topics that kids don't typically think about (preparing for their future, making a difference in the world, belonging, speaking up, etc). It was a great blend of Girl Scout values lived out by someone who has put those values to the test in many different areas of life, and shared them in a way that was applicable to girls of all ages. The themes she shared line up perfectly with all the character traits found in the Girl Scout Law.
Danielle walked away learning to "not sweat the small stuff".
Naomi couldn't believe Michelle Obama is 57 years old and she enjoyed the idea behind "swerve"...learning to adjust and change course when obstacles arise.
I was inspired to find ways to weave values and teachable moments into every day moments.
I look forward to working through the program with any girls who are interested!
